I have a habit of starting Christmas quilts right after Christmas. Before, I'm too busy with handmade gifts and all the other December craziness. Right after, everything's so much calmer but I'm still feeling merry. And then I have almost an entire year to get it finished.
I started this one right after Christmas last year. It was the first Christmas after my mother-in-law's death. She loved Christmas. It was the time she'd get to see her kids and grandkids, after all. I don't think I ever saw her in December without a novelty Christmas shirt on- reindeer, snowmen, Santas. She had them all. So, I gathered up all the Christmas novelty fabrics I had leftover from Christmas quilts, pillowcases and advent calenders, added some leftovers from quilty friends' Christmas projects and every red and green fabric I had and put them all into this crazy, Christmas patchwork in her memory. Since it has elves in it, it reminds me of my elf-hat wearing brother as well.
Tomorrow, I'm starting a new Christmas quilt- this time big enough for my bed. I'm thinking a mostly red Swoon quilt. Why should the kids have all the festive fun?
